Eileen's story

Eileen was born in Ballycastle in 1939, the youngest of five, and grew up within sight of Fair Head. She trained as a nurse at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, where she met Tom at a dance in the autumn of 1960. They married two years later in the little church on the hill and set up home in Ballymoney.

Together they raised three children, Anne, Michael and Claire, and Eileen spent thirty years nursing on the wards of the Causeway coast. Patients remembered her calm hands and her terrible jokes in equal measure.

She was happiest in her kitchen, with the radio on and a soda farl on the griddle, and every one of her seven grandchildren learned to bake at her table. Summers meant the north coast: flasks of tea, sandcastles at Whiterocks and a walk to the end of the harbour wall.

Eileen and Tom were married for sixty-two years. She is loved and missed by her family and by everyone who ever sat at her table.

Treasured moments

Memories of Eileen

Granny, I made your wheaten bread on Sunday and it nearly tasted like yours. I miss you every day.

Rosie 9 February 2025

Thinking of you all. Eileen's soda bread was famous on this street, and so was her kindness.

The McAuley family 5 February 2025

Eileen was the first face I saw when I started on the ward in 1979. She took me under her wing and never let go. A true lady.
